What is lampworking?

In the early centuries, this was the term used to describe how glass art was made. Today, it is used to describe the art of making glass beads. I use a minor torch fueled by oxygen and propane along with borosilicate glass rods. I have several dozen steel rods (mandrels) which are coated with a special bead release. This bead release keeps the glass from adhering to the steel rod. My torch heats up to 2000 degrees and melts the glass onto the steel rods (mandrels). After manipulating the hot glass with tools and creating special effects and detail, a bead is created. Immediately following this process (before the bead cools down to much) the bead is placed in a kiln and annealed at 1050 degrees. The annealing helps to ensure added strength and durability to the bead. The kiln stays at 1050 degrees for two hours and then slowly ramps down, cooling the bead ever so slowly so it will not crack. The bead is then inspected and prepared for integration into a jewelry piece.

How do I maintain the sterling silver?

Sterling silver jewelry, wire and components will tarnish. It should be kept away from detergents, harsh chemicals and perfumes. Never wear your jewelry while swimming or bathing. Chlorine darkens the silver. If it has tarnished, it can be cleaned with a soft polishing cloth (available from most jewelers) or a paste of baking soda and water (scrub gently with a soft toothbrush) will do the job. Liquid silver polish can be used, but make sure not to get it on the lampwork beads or semi-precious stones. When not wearing your sterling silver jewelry, keep it in the anti-tarnish bag that I enclose with every piece. This hinders tarnishing. Please remember that my pieces are for gentle wear. Even though the glass beads have been annealed for added strength and durability, they will break if handled improperly (being dropped on a hard ceramic or cement floor, for example).

How can I tell what the length of a necklace will look like on me?

Necklaces come in a variety of lengths. What necklace you should wear depends not only on what type of neck you have but also on what outfit you are wearing. 18 inches is the most common necklace length. It falls beautifully just below the throat and hangs over collarbones and usually fits you comfortably if your neck is larger. A 20-24 inch necklace falls on the chest. 28-34 inch necklaces can be worn as a single long strand or can be wrapped twice as a double strand.

Jewelry of any kind has small parts that can pose a choking hazard. I would not recommend jewelry for any child under six years of age.

I like a lampwork piece that is already sold! Can I get one just like it?

Should you like a piece that has already been sold, I can create a similar piece - just keep in mind that lampwork beads have their own unique characteristics. Color intensity varies from piece to piece. In regards to semi-precious pieces, I do not repeat designs. However, my holiday earrings and most of my Swarovski crystal bracelets can be re-created for purchase.
